Resume tips for landing job interviews

Your resume is usually the only reason you get called for a job interview. There are several things you must pay attention to before sending a resume to any employer.

  • Don't try to hide vital information in a resume. Any attempt to do so is likely to backfire on you at the interview or afterwards. Make it easy for the recruiter to find all the information she needs about your career.
  • Summaries should be simple, direct and to the point. Rambling summaries may result in your resume being discarded.
  • Be wary of including unnecessary objectives, mission statements, introductions and the like. A resume is meant to be a short, succinct document providing only key information.
  • If you have significant gaps in your job history, be prepared to explain them fully. This is sure to come up in interviews.
  • Don't use the first or third person while writing a resume. A narrative, novel-like style puts people off fast.
  • Keep fonts simple and easy on the eye. Fancy fonts that look like artwork are best reserved for other occasions.
  • Graphics and pictures are a real no-no in most employment resumes.
